Up for auction is a lot of two books of stock certificates from Marshall-Wells Company. Each book contains 250 certificates -- making a total of 500 certificates! One book is from the 1920s and one is from the 1940s.
Among the certificates from the 1940s are a good number from the famous Congdons of The Congdon Mansion in Duluth Minnesota. It was first owned by Chester Congdon, who was considered to be the wealthiest man in Minnesota upon his death in 1916. Elisabeth inherited his estate, which was valued at $40 million.
It is at her mansion where Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse were murdered by Elisabeth's own adopted daughter, Marjorie Congdon, and her second husband, Roger Caldwell. It is believed that they were after Elisabeth's estate. It is quite a tragic story.
These books are still in very good condition, with all the pages intact. They contain some stamps and some attached/stapled papers.
