A Set Of Solid Silver Weighing Scales
DETAIL :
The Scales Show the following features:
-
the entire outer case is made from silver, including the weighing tray
-
they still weigh accurately and the calibrating mechanism seems to work
-
the scales are still clearly marked with divisions which are set in ounces, however there are no numbers visible (I am not sure if these have rubbed or if they were never actually there)
-
Identified as Post Office equipment (faded lettering at the top)
-
a stepped base with curved patterning
-
bright polished silver finish
(Please note: I cannot verify the accuracy of the scales, though they do seem to correspond well with items I have weighed and checked)
INFORMATION :
Assayed: Birmingham, 1900
Maker: Unknown, Makers mark rubbed
CONDITION : The silver case is in very good condition. The dial has obviously faded over time. The original base cover has also largely rubbed away. None of this detracts from a very interesting historical object and one that is rare to find in working order.

I try to describe all my items accurately and give good visual support through photographs and text of what I feel is accurate information
Selling antique and vintage items is not an exact science and a lot of the time it is based on educated guesswork
If there is clear provenance then I will provide it, if not, I will give an opinion expressed with a level of confidence based on my knowledge and experience. I am not so arrogant to assume that I am always correct. I would never deliberately mislead, but, I occasionally get things wrong
For any purchase the buyer should make an informed choice based on the information provided and if they are in any doubt then do not buy it
I am very tolerant of returns based on damage and loss but I will not accept things like:
'You said it was 1940s, my brother told me it was at least 1953 so I don't want it'
'I thought it was bigger' 'It's a much darker blue than I expected' etc
A lot of auction purchases are based on impulse and heat of the moment decisions, this can often lead to buyer remorse, if you are prone to this you should not bid at auctions
I hope this never happens
I spend a lot of my time attending auctions throughout the UK and I have built up a varied collection over the years. Due to lack of space I do from time to time declutter and sell items mostly, these days, through Ebay. I also buy things, that I see at auction which I believe to be a good price and that I can resell at a small profit, thus helping me to pay my expenses. I am not running a business but I am trying to pay for my indulgence.
You can contact me through any of the recognised Ebay outlets
