1923 HALFPENNY - VERY FINE - FULL CENTRE DIAMOND

A strong example of our 2nd rarest pre-dec copper coin

Horizontal Image

A strong example of Australia's second rarest Commonwealth copper coin.

1923 Royal (Branch) Mint records indicate that 1,113,600 halfpennies were struck in Sydney, while none were struck in Melbourne at all. The story doesn't end here however; as later research by John Sharples, (Numismatic Curator of the Museum of Victoria) has proven that the coins struck in Sydney in 1923 were actually dated 1922. The elusive 1923 halfpenny was actually struck in Melbourne sometime between September and November 1923, with the number struck assumed to be around 20,000.

This example has a modest amount of wear both sides - all of the dots in the inner circle of the reverse remain distinct, and importantly for a lot of collectors, the centre diamond in the base of King George V's crown is all there. The coin has an even tan tone both sides, and has a little bit of grime in the legend and devices. We grade it as being in
Very Fine condition.
