A very pleasing example of this classic rarity. Of the whopping 38 Sheldon-13 specimens offered in the Bowers and Merena sale in January 2002 (Dr. Roy Sturgeon collection), this specimen had the 2nd highest grade, (and in my opinion, the example listed with the highest grade just didn’t have the same eye appeal). I have included a photo of the listing from the catalog. When I purchased this coin, (almost 7 years ago), it was in an ANACS slab graded VG10 (with no problems listed). I’m told that nowadays, ANACS no longer does “Net Grading”. They will instead list the detail grade, along with any “problems” (no matter how trivial or severe). Therefore, I believe that this coin is getting a bad rap by being labeled as “Corroded” (which today, is a term associated with ANY level of porosity, so I'm told). Some verdigris is present in the lower part of Liberty’s hair, but does not detract from the overall eye appeal. When viewing this type of early copper, the overall look can change dramatically depending on the type of lighting, and the angle of light. Therefore, I made the effort to include pictures from various light angles to give the prospective buyer as much visual information as possible. It is widely known that of the three one-cent design types from 1793, the Liberty Cap design is the most challenging to obtain (especially with decent eye appeal). In my opinion, no early U.S. type set can be complete without a 1793 Liberty Cap cent, (due to the fact that it is the only Liberty Cap issue with the beaded border design). Finding a Liberty cap cent from 1794 through 1796 is of course far less challenging, (unless you are collecting die varieties). I will surely miss having this coin in my collection. Any questions, don’t hesitate to Email me. Thanks for looking (and happy bidding!).
