Sharp Eagle Eye with Some Original Luster
Grading coins is a subjective endeavor. Every effort has been made to provide photos that assist you in this effort.
The photos are of the actual coin you will receive. Consistent with the declared grade the coin has a very strong strike
with excellent detail in the devices front and back. This planchette reveals two places where the copper-nickel mixture
was not uniform at the top of the eagle's right wing and in a nickel-colored stripe across the left wing. Both sides have
a uniform olive-drab patina with good natural luster coming through in the fields. Common for this issue, the tail feathers
a bit weakly struck, but the eagle eye is sharp and distinct. This is the Large Letters variety, where the "A" and "M" in
"AMERICA" are connected in the serif. The coin has no serious marks or problems. See the photo to see the difference
between the Large and Small letters. Note that this auction is for ONE COIN, the Large Letter variety. The Small Letter
variety is provided for comparison only. Although, I am offering the Small Letter variety in my other auction this week.
The holder is in outstanding condition with only minimal scuffing
in the viewing areas, but nothing that noticably detracts from viewing this impressive piece.
Offered with NO RESERVE, this coin will sell at auction and has a starting price well under its published value.
Also, unlike some sellers who wait to see your feedback, I leave feedback prior to shipping the coin.
That is how sure I am you will be happy with this deal and happy with me.
The Year is 1857: Franklin Pierce was POTUS
at the start of the year, but James Buchanan took over the Oval Office in March. As POTUS he inaugurates the new
trans-Atlantic telegraph cable by exchanging greetings with
Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. However, a
weak signal forces a shutdown of the service in a few weeks. The city of Denver was founded in this year, but it would be
more than fifty years before pennies were minted here. Forty-Niners stream into the Rocky Mountains of the western United
States during this famous Gold Rush. Name the mountain this gold rush was named after.
