Tho portrait does bear a remerkable resemblance to Brutus and it seems likely that the coin was struck as an expression of political sympathy toward Brutus cause.
Marcus Junius Brutus was a Roman senator of the late Roman Republic. He is best known in modern times for taking a leading role in the assassination conspiracy against Julius Caesar ("as Julius Caesar Murder")
The phrase "Sie semper tyrranis" (Thus always to tyrants) is attributed to Brutus at Caesar`s assassination.
The well known phrase "Et tu, Brute" ("and you, Brutus?") was said to Caesar`s last utterance, althoug the sources describing Caesar`s death dissent about what his last words were.
In Dante`s Inferno; Brutus is one of three people deemed sinful enough to be chewed is one of three mouths of Satan, in the very center of Hell, for all eternity. The other two are Cassius and Judas Iskariot, the biblical betrayer of Jesus Christ (Canto XXXIV)

Der Münzmeister L. Servius Rufus wollte mit dem Portrait des Brutus auf der Vorderseite seine Sympathie für die Sache der Caesarmörder zum Ausdruck bringen.
