1989 marked the 500th anniversary of the world's most famous gold coin, the sovereign. Both sovereigns and half sovereigns issued in 1989 had a unique design to mark the special occasion, inspired by the original 1489 design.

The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II seated enthroned.

The reverse shows a crowned shield at the center of a Tudor rose.

Unlike many other years, 1989 half sovereigns were issued only in proof, and in very limited number: only 8888. No bullion half sovereigns were issued that year.

Collectors know the value of this half sovereign. Over the past decade, the demand for 1989 half sovereigns has skyrocketed, and so has the premium for these coins.

Starting bid at a price that is significantly lower than that suggested by various catalogs and prices found elsewhere.
